Why tall homes need a different method
Houston builders have been going up for years. Older bungalows next door to new three-story townhomes is normal in Inner Loop neighborhoods, and the new builds often sit on lots so narrow that a full-size extension ladder cannot lean at a safe angle. Two-story homes in Memorial and Tanglewood have the opposite problem: long roof lines and high eaves over landscaped beds you do not want trampled.

- Multiple roof levels. Water from an upper roof often drains into a lower gutter. If the lower gutter is clogged, the upper roof effectively dumps onto a blocked system.
