Where downspout clogs happen
When gutters overflow in a heavy Houston rain, the first guess is that the gutter is full. Often the gutter is fine and the outlet or the pipe below it is blocked. Common spots:
- The outlet drop. The hole where the gutter feeds the downspout catches leaves, seed pods and shingle grit first.
- The elbows. The bends near the top and bottom snag long debris like pine needle clumps and stick fragments.
- Buried drain lines. Many Houston homes tie downspouts into underground corrugated or PVC pipe that runs to the street, a pop-up emitter or a low spot in the yard. Silt, roots and packed leaves clog these lines.

How long should a downspout extension be?
A common rule of thumb is at least four to six feet from the foundation, longer if the ground is flat. The goal is for the water to run away from the house instead of soaking back toward it.
Can you clear a downspout that goes underground?
