Why gutter guards clog in Houston
Every guard style has a weak spot, and Houston trees find it:
- Live oak catkins and pollen (spring). Long oak flower strands and fine pollen film can bridge over fine micro-mesh. Rain then runs off the edge instead of into the gutter.
- Pine needles (fall peak, all year). Needles can slip through wide screen openings into the trough, and on flat guards they lie across the surface and mat.
- Sweetgum balls and pecan husks. Too big for the gutter, but they pile on top of a guard and hold water and leaves against it.
- Shingle granules. On newer roofs, loose granules wash into the gutter and settle under the guard into a gritty sludge.
- Moss and algae. Houston’s humidity grows a green film on shaded guards that catches more debris.
